Amsonia is a genus of flowering plants in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. It is named in honor of the American physician John Amson. Members of the genus are commonly known as bluestars. Amsonia illustris , as well as tabernaemontana, repens and glaberrima form an extremely close alliance. The validity of maintaining all of these as separate species is questionable. These showy, herbaceous damp loving plants can be found in the Eastern third of Texas. Their preference is for swamps, wet meadows, ditches, streams and low woodlands. These photos were taken in November, although the more normal flowering is between March and June.
